1. What is precipitation?

2. Name 4 different kinds of precipitation and give me one or two sentences to explain what each one is.

3. Precipitation always forms as snow in the clouds, but when it falls to the Earth, sometimes we get snow, sometimes we get sleet, and sometimes we get rain. Please explain why this happens.

4. Draw and label a diagram to show the process of precipitation. This should include: humidity/water vapor, evaporation, condensation, clouds, thunderclouds, precipitation.

Please go to the link listed below. Read the description of adverbs and complete question #1.

You must choose 10 of the adverbs from the list at the bottom of that website. Choose ones that you don't already know. You must then use a dictionary from home (or a website like http://dictionary.reference.com/ ) to find the definition of these words. You must copy down the definitions onto a piece of paper as well. Then you must write meaningful sentences using those words. When you are finished, you should have 10 adverbs, 10 definitions, and 10 sentences. This will be collected for assessment on Thursday.

Week of Jan. 25 - 29

LITERACY

Read Aloud:
-We will finish the book I' ve Seen the Promised Land, by by Walter Dean Myers, we will focus on identifying the main idea.
-Verdi, by Janell Cannon, we will focus on character traits
-The Secret World of Snakes, we will focus on reding features on non fiction text and reading captions and diagrams to enhanace comprehension

Shared Reading:
- Chronology of Civil Rights Movement, focus on reading and understanting informational resources
-Snake Notes to read and learn more about snakes, we will focus on summarizing text

Interactive Writing:
We will write the main idea of pieces of text as we read I've Seen the Promised Land

We will be introducing adverbs to the students this week. We will be doing this through shared readings, interactive writing, and independent writing samples.

Independent Writing:
Students will practive writing adverbs to make simple sentences more interesting, as well as to change/show different meanings in our writing.

Students will also participate in Reading Cycles, Independent Reading and Centers.


MATH:

We will be covering the following:
-Multiplying by Multiples of 10
-Multiplying with 2- Digit Factors
- Estimating Greater Products.

We will interactively write the steps for multiplying by multiples of 10, two-digit multiplication, and estimating greater products. Students will learn to round to the tens and hundreds place to estimate greater products.

Timed Test: this week will be 11s and 12s together.


SCIENCE:
This week we continue with our Weather Unit. Today we talked about humidity, thunder, and lightening. Tomorrow we will take a closer look at how lightning is made, and why we hear thunder after the flash of light.

Wednesday we will dicuss Precipitation.

Thursday will be a quiz on lessons 7 and 8: humidity, thunder, lightening, and precipitation.

Literacy Homework Monday, Jan. 25, 2010

Week of Jan. 18th -22nd

EARLY DISMISSAL:
Thursday is early dismissal. School will end at 11am for students, but they are expected to return home and complete online lessons posted here on the blog for the subjects that they will miss that afternoon.

VOG CHARLA:
Thursday is the VOG Charla for 4th grade. This will take place at 11:30am in the Secondary Conference Room. This is a special conference/presentation for parents. Notices went home to parents. Please send back your RSVP so that they know how much pizza to order.

MATH:
Over the last week we have covered the following lessons in Math:
-Multiplying Tens
-Exploring Multiplication Patterns
-Estimating Products
Tomorrow (Tuesday) will be a multiplication quiz on these concepts.
Wednesday we will start multiplying two-digit numbers. Thursday will be multiplying three-digit numbers. Friday we'll review both 2 and 3-digit numbers, then a test on these problems will be the following Monday (next week).
Timed Test: This Thursday, because the 10s and 11s are both easy factors, we will automatically skip to 10 and 11 together. Next week we will focus on 12 as a factor, then will be switching to division timed tests the week after (two weeks from now).

SCIENCE:
We are continuing with our Weather unit. Tomorrow will be the quiz on wind and wild wind. This will include how wind is created, the convection current, wild winds, and hurricanes and tornadoes.
Wednesday and Thursday we will be discussing "Clouds". Friday will be a quiz on clouds.

LITERACY:
Read Aloud

The Bus Ride that Changed History, by Pamela Duncan Edwars, focus on using picture clues to enhance comprehension.

I've Seen the Promised Land, by Walter Dean Myers, focus on identifying the main idea.

Read aloud for fun!! The BFG, focus on a variety of strategies!

Shared Reading:

Chronology of Civil Rights Movements and a Timeline: Rosa Parks-Dates to Remember, focus on reading and understanding information resources.
The Story Behind the Bus, focus on important and unimporatnt information.


Interactive Writing:
Finish the plural possessive chart from last week.
For our first assignment of this week, students will be writing a descriptive paragraph about "The Story behind the Bus."
For our secBnd assignment, we will be using Martin Luther King's Chronology of the Civil Rights Movement to write 2-3 paragraphs about his life.


Independent Wri ting:
Students will finish writing the sequence of events about Freedom Box, last week's read aloud.
They will write about Martin Luther King on one samples and will describe "The Story Behind the Bus" using their own words for another assignment.

Students will also participate in Centers, Writng Cycle, and Independent Reading.

Week of Jan. 11-15

Literacy



Read Aloud: "Henry's Freedom Box", a true story from the Underground Railroad, by Ellen Levine and Kadir Nelson. We will focus on sequence of events.
"An Apple for Harriet Tubman", by Glennette Tilley Turner. We will focus on problem and solution.

Read Aloud for fun!!!! The BFG, we will focus on a diversity of reading strategies.

Shared Reading: "The Underground Railroad", we will read this piece of text to learn more in depth information about the Underground Railroad and will make text to text connections as well.
Interactive Writing: We will write the conclusion paragraph for "Our New Year's Resolutions" and a paragraph describing the sequence of events in "Freedom Box". We will use sequence words as we write.
Independent Writing: Students will finish their essay " My New Year's Resolutions". They will do peer editing of their work and will write the final draft. When finished, they will write a paragraph explaining the sequence of events in one of our Read Aloud stories. They will also be given a list of phrases so they can write the possessive form of nouns.

Students will also participate in Centers, Independent Reading, and Reading Cycles.






MATH:

Today we reviewed our measurement lessons thus far. Tomorrow (Tuesday) students will have their measurement quiz. For this, they must memorize which is least to greatest (ex: tsp, tbsp, cup, pint, quart, gallon, etc) as well as how many each has of the other for conversions (ex: 3 tsp=1tbsp, 12 inches=1ft, etc.)



Wednesday we will begin chapter 5, which focuses on multiplying by 1-digit factors. This will include multiplying tens (40x6), exploring multiplication patterns (6x4, 6x40, 6x400), and estimating products (8x78 can be estimated 8x80). Next Monday they will have a quiz on these 3 things, then we will move on to multiplying by bigger numbers.



Timed Test: Thursday's timed test will be the 9s time table.



SCIENCE:

Last Friday and today, students worked on an assignment for The Atmosphere. Tomorrow (Tuesday) students will be quized on this topic. Students must know all 4 of the layers of the atmosphere, the order of the layers, and important characteristics of each layer. This information is on a handout in their Science notebooks.



Wednesday and Thursday we will be discussing Wind and Wild Winds, then Friday students will have a quiz on winds.

Week of January 4-8

MATH:

Timed Test - Time test will take place as usual Thursday. This week we will cover 8 and 9 times tables.

This week we are working on Section C of Chapter 10, which focusses again on measurement. This time we are covering weight and capacity. Units covered will be ounces, pounds, tonnes (weight), teaspoon, tablespoon, fluid ounce, cup, pint, quart, gallon (capacity). Thursday we will be changing units. Ex: 1 foot = how many inches? 2 pints = how many cups? Friday we will explore algebra a little bit and then next week will be a test on this section of Chapter 10.

SCIENCE:

Weather Unit!
We are beginning our unit on weather.
Tuesday we talk about what weather is. Wednesday we talk about "The Weather Engine" and Thursday will be small quiz on these two lessons. Friday we will begin to talk about wind.


LITERACY


Students should begin reading a new book for the next book report!!! Starting this Tuesday they will be held responsible for the daily journal entry they have to respond after reading at home!

Read Aloud: "Crickwing", by Janell Cannon. We will focus on identifying the differences between fiction and nonfiction text and making inferences as we read.

Read Aloud for fun!! This week we will try to finish reading the BFG , by Roald Dahl. As always, we will focus on using several reading strategies.

Shared Reading: We will be reading notes about ants and cockroaches from the book "Crickwing". We will focus on using context clues to figure out the meaning of unknown words.

Interactive Writing: We will brainstorm ideas and write an essay: 4A's New Year's Resolutuions. As a community, our class has come up with two great resolutions for this year and we will write about a plan to accomplish them and the positive outcomes of attaining our goals!

We will also review and write the rules for singular possessives and plural possessives.

Independent Writing: Students will be brainstorming ideas and writing an essay about their own resolutions. We have been discussing why New Year's Resolution's are important and how they are goals that will guide us towards becoming better persons. Students are very excited about their resolutions and are already trying hard to accomplish them. Motivate them at home in doing so!!!

Centers- This week students will be working in couples writing a story for a book with out words. They will use the illustrations on the book to write a creative story about it. They have started workig hard and seem to be enjoying it a lot! We will begin new centers next week!
